Who Benefits: |
Walking Tall Charities benefits uninsured and underinsured amputees. |
Facts: |
--There are 2 million amputees living in the U.S. --185,000 individuals lose a limb each year due to diabetes, trauma, cancer and birth defects. --It is predicted that the number of amputations performed each year will increase due to the large number of older diabetics. --Most prosthetic legs cost between $10,000 and $50,000. --Many insurance companies pay for one prosthesis per lifetime, or pay for a small portion of the total cost of a prosthesis. --Although prosthetic technology has improved significantly, many insurance companies do not pay for these "high tech" devices. This can limit an amputee's function and lead to future problems such as falls, an inability to perform job duties and a lack of social/recreational activities. |
