King of the Trails Off-Road Running Series#2 - The Mt. Misery 10 Mile and 5k Trail Runs
Sunday May 9, 2004
10:00AM
Brendan T. Byrne State Forest
Browns Mills, NJ
Application and full details: Are at www.sportingx.com
Description: Why do some athletes drive out of their way to a race that could give them a great deal of pain? Is it the prestige of proudly showing their swollen, twisted ankles to their friends as a token of achievement? The notorious gift of pain is definitely alive and well; it does explain why triathletes are willing to dish out $400 for the Ironman. Maybe it is the added challenge that one never sees in a road race. Or maybe it's an excuse to see the beauty of a new area that entices them to come.
Course: This trail run addresses them all. The beauty of the Pine Barrens coupled with the feeling that the name of the trail brings will sure be able to entice runners a long way from their homes to this race. Starting from Pakim Pond, the long course will take the Cranberry Trail to the Mt. Misery Trail, to Mt. Misery itself, then back along the rugged path to Pakim Pond for the finish.
Hill Scale: 5 out of 10 (average, hills are not steep in the Pine Barrens)
Coutour Scale: 5 out of 10 (average, trail has OK footing in most places).
Amenities: As with the first race of the series, we will supply you with a butt-ugly T-shirt, nasty tasting water, half-eaten donuts (burp), and maybe a psychoanalyst to help you try to reason why you would want to punish yourself in the first place.
Awards: Not your typical overall, masters, and 5 year age group awards!
Overall Series Scoring: Will count toward the King and Queen of the Trails at the end of the year. Details of scoring will be posted soon on www.sportingx.com.
