Who Benefits?: |
This year an estimated 232,090 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and an estimated 30,350 will die from the disease. While one out of six men will be diagnosed with the prostate cancer, only one out of 32 will die from the disease. Among African American men the incidence is roughly 60% higher than those of white or Asian men. However, with more widespread screening and early detection we are putting a dent in those statistics. Education and awareness are the keys. About Our Race: The third annual RUN FOR DAD is a community and family event of the American Cancer Society designed to raise awareness about prostate cancer in men and to highlight the importance of screening and early detection. The event is managed by a small group of prostate cancer survivors, concerned health care professionals and other community and corporate activists. Since the primary goal is to increase awareness and educate men and their families about prostate cancer, 2004 Run For Dad: RUN FOR DAD funds are used primarily to conduct the event. All remaining proceeds go to support prostate cancer research projects and other prostate cancer awareness activities. The 2004 event drew more than 700 participants including some 40 prostate cancer survivors and more than 100 children. Extensive press coverage brought the importance of prostate health to thousands of other people. Proceeds from the event resulted in a $10,000 grant to support a prostate cancer research project. The 2005 Race: RUN FOR DAD 05 will be held Father's Day, June 19, 2005 in beautiful Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey. While there is a 5K run on a USATF certified, traffic free course, the event also includes a 2-mile walk on a park road and paved trails as well as short races for kids. Random prize drawings, special goodies for kids, gifts for all Dads, a disc jockey and summer snacks combine to make it a positive and fun way to honor our fathers.
